The Death of Childhood

I shot this after watching a news piece on bullying. The show was interesting because it talked about bullying and how it starts around middle school. From my experiences, it started much earlier. I found it got easier come middle school and into high school. But that's not the point of this photograph. I have two intentions with this photograph. First, I wanted to raise the question, Is childhood as we knew it, dead or has it just evolved? Secondly, I wanted to do something completely out of the ordinary for me. I've come to a major realization that I've had before, but never at this level; I only need to prove something to myself. What other people may or may not like is their personal taste. I can't change that. If I shoot something that they like, great. If they don't like it and think it's rubbish, great. It's not going to matter to me. Simply because I'm shooting for me now. I wrote last week how I'm so sick of the bullshit pressure I put on myself. I am. I am so over it. I'm shooting what I want to shoot because it makes me happy, or expresses the way I'm feeling about whatever it is that I'm feeling at the present moment. If my creativity wants to get dark, I'm going to follow it all the way down the rabbit hole until I get to where I'm going. I'm tired of trying to create/do/say/be what other people think I should be. I'm going to be me. That's all I can do.
I've said my peace.

New Year's Resolutions Are Bad

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of making New Year's resolutions. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. So, rather than calling it a New Year's Resolution, I'm taking this idea and turning it into something that means something to me. With that being said, I'm going to make an active effort to take more pictures. And it doesn't matter what they are, because I'm going to shoot what I want to shoot. And if my camera isn't doing it for me, I'm going to paint more. And if painting isn't doing it for me, then I'll try my hand at making short films, or writing. Basically, I'm going to use my creativity better this year and not put so much damn pressure on myself to become this famous and well sought after photographer. It may come. It may not. Regardless, I'm going to make myself happy by doing what I want to do. One of my friends said the other day that this is the time of year that we get to start over again. In part, this is true. However, we don't need the new year to make that decision. We can do it at any time. So I say that if/when things are looking bleak, tiresome, overwhelming, etc, make the resolve to change it. Change your mental attitude, your physical attitude, change your life to make it what you want it to be. There's no limit to what we can achieve in our lives. We only limit ourselves. I do hope that all of my friends and family have a great year, decade, and life.

A Dog Day Morning

Every so often I take my two dogs to the South Ogden dog park. We love this place because they can just run around as much as they want and socialize with all of the other dogs that come there to play as well. Normally I don't take my camera, but I took it this morning because of my new "fisheye lens." Here's what I captured. Enjoy!

Making Your Own Fisheye Lens

I made my own fisheye lens for a total of $0. I called up Lenscrafters and told them I was looking for a piece of eyeglass that was thick, uncut and had a large prescription on it. After a little discussion, she informed me that I should just come down and rummage through the box of old lenses that they had that they couldn't use for one reason or another. Here's the best part though, she said that I could just have one. So, Michelle and I went down, went through the box, and picked out two different lenses that we thought might work. (The lady at Lenscrafters was way cool about it. Thank you Marissa!)

I brought them home and threw the glass in front of my lens. While holding it there, I experimented. This way looks okay. This way doesn't. This looks cool. Ooh, right there. After having Michelle measure out how far I wanted the glass, I had to find a way to attach it to my lens. After rummaging through all of my stuff, I found a piece of cardboard that I could cut, mold and tape to the end of my lens. A little tweaking, hot glue, patience and electrical tape and voila! I have a "fisheye lens"!

A Day of Shooting With Mom

My parents came into town this past weekend. I have to say that I wish they lived closer. While I live in beautiful Utah, my parents still live in my hometown of Vacaville, CA. While in town, we took a drive up Ogden Canyon and ate breakfast at The Oaks. (If you get a chance, eat there. Trust me. Awesome food and excellent ambiance.) After breakfast, we headed up the canyon to the valley that resides just east of us. This valley contains towns like Eden and Huntsville. There is an old monastery up there with real nuns and everything! We didn't get to see any on this trip, but the area was extremely beautiful especially with all of the rain we've had this spring/summer so far.
What is fun and interesting to me is how two people who each have a camera are in the same location but see completely different things. These are pictures from my viewpoint. I hope you enjoy!

10 Day Challenge: Day 10

Wow, I made it! I shot a NEW picture every day for 10 days! I have to say, I am a little proud of myself! Next challenge is going to be a little different. I'll let you know what it is as soon as I get the "rules" squared away in my own head. I hope you've enjoyed some of the pictures I've taken during this challenge. I chose to do some shooting at night today. I do wish I would have waited to start this project next weekend instead because I believe the weather would be warmer. Again, busy today. Did yardwork this time. But I was still able to pull out a pretty cool picture, I think. Enjoy!

This doorknob kind of got me thinking. This particular doorknob has gotten a lot of action over the years, and continues to get used to this day. It's just amazing to me how long certain things last and how quickly other things break, or disappear, or get lost, or get chewed up by your dogs, etc. Hmm. Just thoughts.

Today was a rather busy day for me. I spent the majority of my day finishing the remodel project I started on the bathroom 3 months ago. Like other things in my life, this project was lacking motivation. But low and behold, I got some major work done today, and for that I feel good. I also decided that because I was feeling good about my accomplishments, that I would go take my picture for day 2. I'm glad I did. I'm really glad I did. I think dandelions get a bad wrap honestly. Yes, they are a weed. They don't look particularly pretty. But, like most of us, when you were a kid and perhaps more recently than that, you've picked one and blew it. When you do that, it transports you to a more simpler time. This could have been 5 years ago, it could have been 50 years ago. Whenever it was, wasn't it fun? Try it again this week, since most of us are in spring, finally. Give dandelions a chance to transport you. Away from here. Back to where you want to be.

A Mother's Gift

The problem with having a niece like Aspen is this; Every time we do a little shoot for presents or whatnot, I can't help but to shoot stuff that I want to see. The inherent problem with that is that every time we do this, I think that this is the best work I've ever done or the best shot I've ever taken of this adorable little girl. This is a "problem" I can live with easily. I hope you enjoy these cute pictures because she is such a dream child.

I do hope that on this Mother's Day, you realize that your mother is special. Not just today, but every single day you should remember how she amazing she is, was, will be and why.

My wife and I recently took a vacation. We haven't had a "real" vacation since 2005 when we got married. With three dogs, two cats and a mortgage to pay, it gets kinda tough. So, to celebrate our 5 year anniversary, we decided to go on a cruise to Mexico. We invited my parents and we all had a blast.

Because I feel that there are so many that I want to share, I've decided to break it up over a couple of blogs. This way your brains won't explode. Now these are in no particular order. I hope you enjoy!

Revisiting A Past Photo

Last year, I dragged my wife to downtown Salt Lake on a cold February night so I could take some photos. While we were downtown, we ran across the outdoor ice skating rink located at the Gallivan Center. I set up the camera on the tripod and started shooting. I got some stuff that was okay. But I also got a picture that I fell in love with. I’ve posted this photo before, but after actually going ice skating last night with the wife at the same place, I had to post it again. Ice skating outdoors is an extremely romantic experience. I highly recommend it.

Side Note: This photo was taken on February 20, 2009 and yesterday happened to be February 20, 2010. Total coincidence! I didn’t realize when this photo was taken until I had already decided to post it again this morning. Crazy, huh?

Art Is Subjective

I think that’s why I love art. That’s why I love creating art. What one considers “things”, another might consider art. I woke up this morning and decided I needed to create something. This is what I created. I haven’t done this in a while. I’ve been in a slump, a major creative slump and it felt great to get out of that this morning. For the past several months, I’ve been questioning my ability as a photographer. But I have decided something; I will find my audience eventually. My audience will come, and they will appreciate my art. So, what I need to do until then is just keep doing what I’m doing.

I've been in a bit of a funk lately. Not really sure why I'm a photographer. Doubting myself as an artist. This is all kind of crazy, because I know for a fact that I'm not the only photographer going through this. A friend posted a link to a video that another photographer made that really struck a chord with me. I believe that video was made for me.

There's another photographer who inspires me big time that wrote a blog the other day that also put things into perspective for me. Click here to view it. After reading this yesterday, I decided to do something about it. And that something happens to be posting this blog. I became a member of Join In Photography a few weeks ago, and because of my "funk", I haven't done anything about it. In fact, I've been dreading posting anything on there. Not today. Today I feel empowered. I'm a photographer. And I think a good one. I don't care if everyone doesn't like my art. I only care if a few do. And which is why I'm sticking to shooting the way I want to shoot. I'm not going to shoot the way that someone wants me to shoot. My style is my style, not anyone elses. With that being said, here are a few of my favorite shots from last month's assignment from Join In Photography.com, which happened to be "Circles". Last week I drove to Salt Lake and decided it was a perfect day to walk around. I had no where to go. I had no destination. I had all the time in the world. It's amazing to me what you see when you walk somewhere instead of drive. I found myself finding places that I never knew existed before. This was truly one of the most amazing experiences I've had just walking around. These are just some of the pictures I took that I wanted to share with everyone. Enjoy!

Tuesday Afternoon At The Farmer's Market

I attended the Downtown Farmer's Market on Tuesday afternoon. While paroozing the local fare, I came across a delightful couple who sold plants. What they had displayed and out for sale were not your typical houseplants. The majority of these plants looked totally fake. Maybe that means that the fake ones really do look real! With that being said, I couldn't help but take some pictures of these magnificent plants. Enjoy!

Jenni contacted me wanting some portraits done of her son, Quinn. We met up Saturday morning and had a blast taking pictures and enjoying the perfect weather. Quinn is a boy, 100% boy. These were all shot using my "new" Kodak Brownie using 35mm film. I'm still working on how to get the entire image, just need to find the right kind of scanner. I found out that I was not advancing the film far enough. This was a trial and error process, so hopefully the next roll of film will be better. But still, let's give it up for awesome mistakes!

New Addition To The Family

Now, hold on. It's not that kind of news. No, but this is still pretty exciting! Well, for me at least.

I picked up this little beauty from a thrift store today. Not surprisingly, it was being kept under lock and key.
Now, this is a 620 film camera. Originally manufactured by the Kodak corporation from the late 40's to the early 60's, she's in fairly good condition, minus a few knicks here and there. But, here's the cool part...I've fitted it to shoot with 35mm film! This is all trial and error, but I know I'm not the only one doing this out there, so I know it's possible. In fact, there's this really cool Flickr group that I suggest you check out. I'm still in the learning process as to how to develop this film because I want to be able to see the whole image from the negative. Guess I'm going to have to scan these babies. Hopefully, I will get lucky and be able to produce some pretty cool images with this cool camera. So, please keep checking! I know I've been slacking lately, but that's because of other obsticles in my way. Soon enough, I will have so much that I've shot that I won't be able to keep up with it!

The wife and I were walking around downtown Ogden a few weeks ago looking for a studio space when we stumbled upon this new place called The Jib Yard. This place is right up my alley. For those of you who don't know what jibbing is, check out this explanation on Wikipedia.

They had their grand opening yesterday, so I decided to go down with my camera and check it out. This place is sick. (That means cool...) Please check it out and tell all those kids you know who love doing this stuff on the mountain that they don't have to stop during the summer just because there's no snow! It's well worth it!

Polaroid Saturday

How excited was I the other day to be searching through my local thrift store and come upon several Polaroid camera's that appeared to be in good condition! The excitement ran through me like a bolt of lightning. After I got home, reality set in. Polaroid doesn't make their instant film anymore. Sure, you can buy it online, but I'm not one for waiting, and spending money, for that matter. So, I have this "new" camera sitting in my studio just waiting to be used, waiting for me to break down and order some film online. I think she's going to be waiting for a while.

Then I made a really cool discovery.

Not like a new species discovery where I'm going down in the history books, but more like a Columbus discovery; finding something else instead of what you were originally looking for. I found a program that allows you to turn any picture into a Polaroid, digitally! You can find the link here. This is a very fun program. Definitely not the same as having a real Polaroid in your hand, but still fun. Thanks Henry Sene Yee, I found it on your blog!

A Little Bit Of Love...

My wife and I went downtown last weekend and participated in the Gallery Stroll, which happens every third Friday of the month. These are some of the images I captured. I didn't realize it at the time, but I captured a lot of love. Enjoy!

This couple was cute. I'm pretty sure they were just dating, but they seemed very "in the moment".

This horse drawn carriage was simply beautiful as it passed. I love the idea of being able to do that, even in Salt Lake City.

Beauty in Architecture

I took these a couple of years ago while I was living in Colorado with my wife. I forgot about these pictures until my wife dug them up for me. These photographs came out amazing and I have not touched any of them up.

This particular building is not a giant among the suburban homes, but rather a modest church near downtown Colorado Springs, CO. But this shot makes it feel big.

I really wanted just to sit for a while and enjoy the beauty of it all.

I feel this shot makes the church seem very mysterious, in its own right.

This was a beautiful sculpture. Amazing lines, gorgeous engravings, a sensual design.

I thought this wall was just so interesting as I was walking past it. I have to admit, I haven't seen many of these types of walls in a long time. I guess it sort of reminds me of my childhood.

Music inspires all of us. It doesn't matter how old you are, what generation you came from, what music you listen to; music invokes all sorts of emotions in all of us.

Why do we go to concerts? Why do we spend the time, energy, and money to go see bands that we like?

One of my favorite shots of Vince from the ska band Suburban Legends. To me, this really conveys the energy of a live show.

These people are artists. And I don't mean to use the word "artist" as the major record labels have changed the meaning of the word. They have created something that means something to someone, the same way artists like Picasso, Chigall, Ansel Adams, have created works of art that make you feel something.

So, here's a question to my readers: "Who, or what, inspires you?"

I meet him today as I was heading to my compost pile, and I must admit, I had never seen him there before. According to Charles, however, he's been there the entire time.
